Bishop favor gun control? Who knew? (Everyone)

It's not a surprise that the USCCB would be in favor of banning all private gun ownership, considering that we're in a phase where pacifism is touted as the answer to evil in the world. One would think that they'd consider what's happened in England since private ownership of hanguns has been disallowed.

And of course, with the situation in Tucson, again, it's guns that kill people, not people that kill people.

Read about it (about halfway down) in the news brief from Catholic News Service :
http://www.catholicnews.com/data/briefs/cns/20110114.htm

And of course, the NCR (reporter, not Register), had an article about the Bishops and gun control:

Nice one!

Catholic Blogs seem fairly unanimous that only passive resistance by individuals is 'acceptable'.

Tell that to the armed woman faced with a rapist.

Amen, Left Footer. Pacifism doesn't make sense as a matter of policy.

Turn the other cheek, and all that, but I don't think we're supposed to go around with a sign that says "beat me up, I won't fight back - I'm a Catholic".

To many people don't understand there's a difference between being a Christian and a door mat!

I like how you pick and choose which times to get behind the bishops. You're a shining example of cafeteria Catholicism.

Yea, okay Anonymous. Typical liberal - attack the messenger, while having no argument for or against the message.

I'm sure you "stand with" the Bishops on this one, too. Or, should I say, hide behind the curtains with them on this one.

My sieve-head doesn't remember where, but I read in a blog today an account of the work of the Pope's bodyguard, who is, apparently, usually unarmed. He says it's safer that way.

The Swiss and other Papal Guards, however are supplied with up-to-date firearms and trained in their use.

Seems the Pope is no pacifist, and we're in good (the best!) company.

That's interesting. I wonder why the bodyguard would say it's safer that way. Good that the Swiss and Papal guards are up to snuff.

From a libertarian POV, you might as well paint bull's eyes on every civvie. In the past century, 200 million people were murdered... by their own governments. I would rather see every lawful citizen have a fighting chance against lawless madman and oppressive state.

An armed citizenry is the best defense against an overbearing government.

Pacifism & appeasement, whether by governments or individuals, is never the answer against aggression.

Paul - Hear! Hear!

In reply to your earlier question, I think the Papal bodyguard said "It's safer that way" because he travels in the Popemobile, close to the Pope, and might find himself firing into the crowd at a would-be assassin and hitting the innocent.

I really enjoy this blog. Do you know of any good resources (preferably books) that make a firm argument for the dissolution of the USCCB and perhaps an argument in favor of the pope granting primatial status to the Archbishop of Baltimore?

Thanks.

Nick

Considering AofB's reputation, which I would grant is getting better, I don't know that I'd be in favor of such a thing. I do know that dissolution of the USCCB would put alot of liberals out of work. :oD
