Couldn't you just imagine it? The Pope given an opportunity to apologize for all these awful "Catholics" in the public square and in the hierarchy? That would be just too rich.

Paul, I like most of your stuff but I have to say that some of the stuff you write seems very anti-Catholic. Let me explain: in several of your posts you have made snide remarks about Vatican II and frankly, it's a little ridiculous. Regardless of how you *feel* Vatican II may have soiled the Church (which is ludicrous to begin with), the fact still remains that it is/was a valid eccumenical council and as such is binding. If you wish to deny the validity of it or don't even believe it to be legitimate in the first place, then you can hop on over to the SSPX or if you simply want to retain "Catholic" in your religious affiliation, join the Eastern Church.

John, you're projecting on to me the feeling that some others have. I've never expressed that VII wasn't a valid council.
I would simply ask you to name anything that improved as a direct result of Vatican II.
I'm sure you're familiar with that "Leading Catholic Indicators" (sic) book that came out a few years back, highlighting the desolation that's occurred since the 60's.
I would argue that the "Springtime" of Pope Benedict has borne more good fruit in just a few years than the "Springtime of Vatican II" has borne in all of the prior 40 or so years combined.
I would argue that the Charismatic Renewal was a great fruit which came out of the Second Vatican Council.

You kidding right? A group of people that resemble something from a wacky Evangelical church belonging to Peter Popoff? Give me a break! People need to stop kidding themselves with this false sense of "obedience" and see that the last 40 years have been disastrous. It was already brewing up in the early 50s and Vatican II was the perfect opportunity to go ape on the church.
Positive results of Vatican II?
-Improved relationship with Jews (thanks in large part to Nostra Aetate), other non-Christians, and non-Catholic Christians.
-The liberation of theology from the rationalistic stranglehold of the manual approach.
-The laity (pray, pay, and obey!) having the option of doing something at Mass other than praying the rosary, watching from a distance as they follow along in a missal, or worrying (before receiving the Eucharist) about whether they swallowed any water when they brushed their teeth that morning.

You're the one who's got to be the one kidding. Have you ever heard of Fr. Cantalamessa? Preacher to the Papal household? You know, the one who would preach to John Paul the Great? Have you ever read any of his homilies on the charismatic renewal? Do you even pay attention to the fact that the Vatican has noted the charismatic renewal as a valid movement within the church? Or are you on the SSPX side of the fence?
